|1977 was a good year.
Charlie's Angels was on TV, disco was everywhere, Fleetwood Mac's classic album Rumours was at the top of the charts, Saturday Night Fever and Star Wars were playing at the movie theatres, and you could fly a brand new 1977
Thunderbird Town Landau wherever you were going, be it the disco or a fancy
restaurant. And when you arrived, everyone wanted to be you.
1977 was a very good year indeed.
The most luxurious Thunderbird for 1977.
Resurrecting a classic name from the past, the Town Landau was the top
of the line Thunderbird model in 1966, and set itself apart from the other
models with its elegant blind quarter roof, which eliminated the rear side
quarter windows. In its first year, it was the number one selling model
in the line. Which made it the perfect name for the mid-year luxury Thunderbird
trim package. 1977 was a year of major change for the Thunderbird, but
by the time the first 1977 Town Landau models were rolling off the assembly
line, Ford knew it had a hit on its hands.
The new mid-size Thunderbird wasn't just setting new sales records, the
old ones were crashing and burning! The best sales year prior to 1977 had
been 1960, when 92,843 cars were sold. By mid-year 1977, it was pretty
obvious that record had gone down hard. When everything was said and done,
the 1977 Thunderbird took top honors with 316,140 cars sold. Apparently
new car buyers liked the T-bird as well as they did Rumours by Fleetwood Mac, which was released in February 1977, and had a Chart
Peak of #1. It was on the charts for 134 weeks, and as of 2007, it had
been certified a Platinum seller...19 times! Yeah, Ford had a hit on their hands.
At the time, the Town Landau was the best equipped Thunderbird ever. You
could literally walk in, pick your colors, and fly out in one of the most
extensively equipped cars on the road. But Thunderbird was always about
choice, so you had a wide variety of color ensembles to choose from. Options?
Yes, there were a few:
- A dozen vinyl roof choices
- Power Moonroof in 5 colors to match the vinyl roof
- Ultra-soft Leather Seat Trim
- Tu-Tone Paint treatment
- Automatic Temperature Control
- Illuminated Entry System
- Fingertip Speed Control
- Quadrasonic Tape Player
- Electric Rear Window Defroster
- Protection Group
In fact, the color choice was a big consideration. If you decided on the
vinyl roof, it could coordinate with the body color or contrast with it.
Same for the bodyside moldings. With the Tu-Tone Paint treatment, you could
go without a vinyl roof, or choose a vinyl roof and a Power Moonroof!
No matter what your unique requirements may have been, the 1977 Thunderbird
Town Landau was able to meet them. 1977 was a very good year...indeed.
Now if we could just find that Bee Gees Quad-8 tape!
