LEGEND:
+ New color for 1978

The 1978 Versailles had a stunning clarity in its finish.

Versailles' brilliant, deep, sparkling surface was the result of a multi-step process that has the pigment lying below a clear, protective coating. Most other cars of the day had the pigmentation on the surface, and its a difference that is stunning in its clarity and brilliance. The Clearcoat surface was resistant to airborne pollutants and most other types of staining.

The Versailles body panels first undergo a zinc phosphate coating and a dip primer, in which the car's entire body is submerged in a 100-foot tank. A second coat of primer is applied electrostatically, and that is followed by two double coats of enamel paint with the color pigments embedded within. Automatic spray guns using 50,000 volts of electricity assure a uniform color coat adhesion to the body. This wet-on-wet process also has the added benefit of drying to an extra hard finish, making it more resistant to chips and scratches.

Multiple coats of clear acrylic enamel are then applied, which are hand-buffed and polished to a mirror-like shine unlike that of any other automobile.

The resultant smoothness of the finish was considerably superior to that of typical paint processes.
