The 1977 Oldsmobile Toronado was the first to come equipped with the 403 V-8, an effort to improve fuel economy. Also new for 1977 were quad parking/turn signal lights under the headlamps, and unique Toronado emblems mounted in the leading edges of the fenders that illuminated when any exterior lights were on.

A limited edition Toronado XS model sported a unique wrap around rear window that was very distinctive. The XSR pictured at left was a one off car, and never went into production. It featured power operated Glass T-Top panels over the front seat area.

The following year would be the last for the big 122-inch wheelbase Toronado, as times and luxury car buyers were demanding more fuel efficient cars, and Oldsmobile would deliver that in 1979 with a smaller 114-inch wheelbase Toro.
