The 1968 Oldsmobile Toronado received its first noticeable styling change
in this, its third year of production. The Corvette-inspired pop-up headlights
were replaced by rotating grille sections that exposed the lights for nighttime
driving. A powerful new high performance engine was introduced as part
of the W-34 option in 1968, which featured a one year only forced air induction
system, and is a very rare and much desired find today.
Did you know that the headlamp covers featured a vacuum temperature sensor
that opened the grille panels if the car was running hot? This allowed
more cool air to flow to the radiator. It was all automatic, and when in
operation, it's unlikely the driver ever knew what was happening.
