The 1979 Ford Thunderbird would be the end of another era for the Thunderbird.
Even though the T-Bird underwent a drastic downsizing in 1977, fuel mileage
and fuel costs were continuing to become more important than ever, and
Ford's Corporate Average Fuel Economy (CAFE) figures were too high. This
meant another downsizing for many Ford Motor Company automobiles.
To cap off the most popular Thunderbird body style ever, Ford introduced
the Heritage model for 1979. Basically the same package offered in 1978
as the very popular Diamond Jubilee Edition, the Heritage was available
in a limited number of color combinations. The Thunderbirds that were to
immediately follow would be much changed, and would not be popular in the
market. The Thunderbird would continue to change as the years passed, but
1979 would be the last year of big sales numbers to date for the Ford Thunderbird.
