The stylish roofline of the 1958 Thunderbird Hardtop set the tone for Thunderbird Hardtops through 1969, and ushered
in a new class of car, the personal luxury car. The compact Thunderbird
was powered by a 300 horsepower V-8 engine, which offered thrilling performance.
Inside, individually contoured bucket seats in front were separated by
a center panel console that housed controls for the optional heater and
air conditioner, power windows, and concealed radio speaker. Ash trays
were also provided for the convenience of front and rear seat passengers.
Rear seats were contoured for two people, and everything was color coordinated
with the exterior finish.
The new 1958 Thunderbird was introduced at a splashy New Year's Eve Party
at the Thunderbird Country Club in Palm Springs, California. Despite its
late announcement, it was one of just two cars to show a sales increase
during the recession year of 1958.
The 1958 Thunderbird was Motor Trend's 1958 Car of the Year.
