The 1956 Thunderbird made port hole windows and Continental Kits popular, and these two items are still among the most recognized features of the '56 T-Birds. Both were designed to solve problems: poor visibility with the hardtop installed, and lack of space in the luggage compartment due to the spare tire. Ford introduced its Lifeguard Design safety equipment in 1956 as well, becoming the first major auto manufacturer to focus on safety. But safety didn't sell in 1956, horsepower did, and the race for performance was underway. The T-Birds were spectacular performers, but their true destiny would be creating new markets and sparking a love of automobiles for generations to come.
