![]() The 1961 Oldsmobile Starfire was powered by Oldsmobile's new Skyrocket V-8 engine. Sportier in performance and appearance than any recent Olds produced, the new Starfire featured four inch wide anodized aluminum strips along each side of the car, which immediately set it apart from any other Olds. The 1961 Starfire interior featured pleated top grain leather bucket seats up front separated by a functional chromed center console that housed a tachometer. Interior upholsteries were color-harmonized to match the exterior finish. This was the first General Motors vehicle marketed to compete with the Ford Thunderbird, but Oldsmobile would have another in a few years with the 1966 Oldsmobile Toronado. The final year for the Starfire would be 1966, although the name would return later for a sporty compact that had little relation to the earlier cars. |
