The Imperial had the most restrained styling of the big three luxury cars
in 1959. Cadillac had its huge rocketship tail fins, and Lincoln was in
the middle of a styling cycle that wasn't especially loved by the public.
Continuing with the same body style that was introduced in 1957, the Imperial
received modest and tasteful updates each year. None of these changes helped
sales much, even though the Imperial had neat touches that the others did
not, like the optional Silvercrest stainless steel roof inserts, the Landau
rear roof canopy that simulated a vinyl covering, and front seats that
swiveled to make entry and exiting easier.
The Imperial was very dignified in a year when its competition went a little
bit crazy.
