Except for a few 1967 models, the 1968 Mercury Cougar was the first production
Ford Motor Company automobile to offer a factory power sunroof as a regular
production option. Sunroofs were available on the 1960 Thunderbird and the 1967 Thunderbird Apollo, but the 1960 version of the T-bird used a manually operated sunroof panel,
and the 1967 cars were built to special order. Hot 1968 Cougars to look
for include the XR-7G (shown at left), the GT-E, and the Dan Gurney Special.
Cougar continued its position as the most luxurious car in its class, and
provided luxury features like concealed headlamps, sequential turn signals,
and bucket seats as standard equipment. Leather seating surfaces were included
on some models as well. Cougar's elegant lines and sporty styling made
it stand out from the pack, and the new models and options introduced in
its second year made it impossible to ignore.
